What is reborning?
A reborn doll is a manufactured vinyl play doll that has been transformed in order to achieve as much realism as possible in order to resemble a human body. The process of creating a reborn doll is referred to as reborning, and the doll artists are referred to as reborners.
The process.
To make reborn dolls every aspect must be considered to make the baby look and feel realistic. Each baby is different and has his or her own unique little features and characters. Reborning involves numerous time consuming steps. Reborn doll kits are made from very soft vinyl and consist of a head, arms and legs.
The skin is painted with various techniques to add to the appearance of translucent skin tones, with effects such as veins, blotching and "milk spots" to resemble the skin of a new born baby. The most basic form of the process involves taking a vinyl doll, adding multiple layers of paint to give the doll a skin tone appearance. The doll parts need to be baked to have the paint set.
The hair and eye lashes are hand micro rooted with real Mohair, one hair at a time using a special felting needle. This process takes between eight and sixteen hours to root. I use only the best quality products in and on my babies. Fine mohair or human hair is used. You can have dolls with open eyes or sleeping dolls.
A nice doe sued or calico cloth body is used, which is stuffed and weighted to feel like you are holding a real newborn baby. The weight corresponds with the age of a real baby to achieve a real effect.
Magnets are attached inside the head for attaching a pacifier. Electronic devices can be implanted in the chest to add a heartbeat to this doll.
